Known as "Billy" Delano, he was one of the foremost architects in the United States from the early to the middle years of the 20th century He began his career as a young man in the office of Carrere & Hastings, where he met his partner Chaster Aldrich. Together they formed Delano and Aldrich.  He designed the Yale Chapel, the Marine Air Terminal building, a round one, for Pan Am at LaGuardia Airport (today the oldest air terminal building in use), Otto Kahn's Oheka Castle as well as the Colony, Knickerbocker and Union Clubs in New York City as well several commissions for the Rockefeller family from the begiining of their partnership (he was distantly related to JDR Jr's wife Abby Aldrich) as well as John D. Rockefeller's house in Tarrytown, Kykuit (now open to the public).  He was also, as you can see, a very talented artist. This charming watercolor depicts a beach scene from the 1920's on Fire Island, where he had a house.  He did these little vignettes for himself and occasionally shared them with friends. I bought this from the estate of his son.
