George III Mahogany Plate Pail with a tapering staved side held together by brass bands, and with a substantial brass bowed handle and looped ends attaching to the brass banding. The open section allows for plates to be easily handled.

"The long passages, which frequently separated kitchen and dining-room in 18th-century houses, made the carrying of plates a formidable task for servants.  To facilitate transport, mahogany pails and carriers were produced, and these, though not represented in  trade catalogues of the period, are sometimes mentioned in bills and accounts. In 1769 Chippendale's firm supplied Sir Edward Knatchbull with 'a neat mahogany plate Basket with Brass Bowhandle'."
